Some cracks in the Tswana fairy tale
Aug. 10th, 2015 05:10 pmBotswana is frequently shown as a good example of unusual (at least for African standards) prosperity, political stability, good human rights record, democracy and pluralism. But last year when the latest general election happened, some events might have started showing that at this point some cracks are beginning to appear in this success story. And the problem might be stemming from the fact that the diamonds production, which has largely been Botswana's main source of prosperity, is showing signs of slowing down. And when that well dries out, the political turmoil is bound to begin. In fact, it may already have. If we add the HIV epidemic, the high unemployment and the chronic environmental issues Botswana is having, our northern neighbor might be in for quite a rough ride. Or not. If it plays its remaining cards well.
